School Field Trip Programs   

Self-guided Visit (on your own)

A few Self-guided dates are still available for the 2014-2015 school year.  Please call to inquire.

Fees include admission to the gardens and Ladew’s Nature Walk for the entire day. Pre-registration is required. At least one adult chaperone per 10 children is required.  Call (410) 557-9570, ext. 226 to register.

Ladew Fieldtrip Program Descriptions

Fun in the Gardens
Grades: Pre-K – 6th
Trip Length: 1 to 1 ½ hour
Season: late March through October
Students will experience a general tour of the gardens using a scavenger hunt. They will examine the topiary, explore the ponds for frogs and fish, observe birds and insects and learn some history of Mr. Ladew’s life and garden designs.

Storytime in the Gardens: Frog Fun or Somefin’ Fishy
Ages: 2-5 years
Trip Length: 45 minutes to 1 hour
Season: April through October
Participate in a storytime reading of 3-4 stories in one of the gardens, followed by a brief exploration of the stream and pond for frogs, tadpoles and fish. Limited to 20 children.

Signs of Fall / Signs of Spring
Grades: pre-K – 1st
Trip Length: 1 to 1 ½ hour
Season: September through 1st week of November / late March through mid-May
Come observe the many signs of the season in the gardens. In the spring, encounter blooming flowers, tadpoles changing to frogs, and birds building nests. In the fall, discover beautiful leaf colors and shapes, emerging fruits and seeds, and busy animals preparing for the changes changes ahead.

From Seed to Flower
Grades: pre-K – 3rd
Trip Length: 2 to 2.5 hours (1 to 1.5 hour for pre-K/K)
Season: September through 1st week of November / late March through May
Students will examine the parts and functions of seeds, as well as explore the gardens in search of seeds and the flowers and plants they grow into. While observing signs of the season, students will witness and discuss concepts including pollination and seed dispersal.

Trees are Terrific
Grades: pre-K – 4th
Trip Length: 2 to 2.5 hours (1 to 1.5 hour for pre-K/K)
Season: September through 1st week of November / late April through May
Students will discover the important uses, functions and parts of trees through various sensory activities, primarily on the Nature Walk. Students will identify trees based on physical characteristics and observe the wildlife with which they interact every day.

Exploring Habitats
Grades: 3rd – 8th
Trip Length: 2.5 hours
Season: September through 1st week of November / late May
Students will explore and characterize the meadow and forest habitats of Ladew’s Nature Walk. Common plants and animals found in each habitat will be identified and the resources needed for survival will be recognized. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of interrelationships between all living things.

Fees and Scheduling Info:

# of students: Maximum of approx. 50 per session;
Minimum 10 per session (or $50 fee for less than 10)
Classes are split into small groups of approx. 8-12 students each and led by Ladew instructors.
# of chaperones: At least 1 per 10 students; no more than 3 per 10 students preferred
Student Fees: $5 per student (age 2-12); $10 per student (age 13+)
Chaperone Fees: 1 chaperone per 10 students is free; additional chaperones are $7 each (includes full day admission)
Lunch: Groups are welcome to picnic at the picnic tables near the parking lot or on the meadow lawn.
Available Days & Times Mondays – Fridays; morning & afternoon sessions are available; back-to-back sessions can be scheduled.
Fall Season: September through October
Spring Season: late March through May
Summer Season: June through August
