What’s Showing Off?

Although the weather can make two or more weeks difference in the time of bloom for many flowers,
this listing shows when we normally expect to see blooms at Ladew.

April  – May

Spring bulbs: Camassia, Fritillaria, Hyacinthoides hispanica (Spanish Bluebells),  Leucojum vernum (Spring Snowflake), Muscari (Grape Hyacinths), Narcissus, Scilla (Siberian Squill), and Tulips. 

Early spring annuals: Violas and Pansies, along with color from mixed greens like lettuces, kale, and collards. 
Perennials: Aquilegia, Dicentra (Bleeding Heart), Helleborus, Iberis (Candytuft), Iris, Mertensia (Virginia Bluebells), and Peonies.
Shrubs and Trees: Azaleas, Cercis (Redbud), Cornus, Deutzia, Laburnum (Golden Rain Tree),  Magnolia, Malus (Crabapples), Pieris (Andromeda), Rhododendrons, Spirea, Viburnum, Weigela, and Wisteria.

June - August  

Annuals (too many to name!) and bulbs: Allium and Lycoris squamigera (Naked Ladies).

Perennials: Actaea (Snakeroot), Agastache, Aquatic plants, Anemone (hybrida and hupehensis), Astilbe,Clematis, Coreopsis, Echinacea, Eupatorium (Joe Pye Weed), Geranium, Hemerocallis, Heuchera, Hosta, Iris, Lobelia, Monarda, Nepeta, Perovskia, Phlox, Rudbeckia, Salvia, and Sedum.

Shrubs and Trees: Buddleia, Caryopteris, Clethra (Pepper Bush), Cotinus (Smoke Bush), Hydrangea, Lagerstromeia, (Crape Myrtle), Magnolia virginiana, Rhododendrons, Roses, and Vitex.  

 

September-October

Many annuals will bloom until the first frost.

Perennials: Aconitum (Monk’s Hood), Anemone, Aster (several species), Boltonia, Ceratostigma (Plumbago), Chelone (Turtlehead), Chrysanthemum, Clematis, Colchicum, Iris, Sedum, Solidago (Goldenrod), and Vernonia (New York Ironweed).

Shrubs and Trees: Callicarpa (Beauty Berry), Caryopteris, Crataegus, Ilex, Pyracantha, Roses, and Viburnum.
