Amateur painter and sculptor Harvey Ladew had a keen appreciation of art in many forms — painting, traditional sculpture, and of course, the art of topiary.
Over the years, Ladew Gardens has welcomed local, national and internationally renowned artists to the Gardens to exhibit and sell their work.

These remarkable artists include Sam Robinson, Michael and Joanne Bare, Gavin Brooks, Henry Koehler, Meg Page, Matthew Harris, Mary Ann Mears, and Palden Hamilton, among others.

This year we welcomed acclaimed painters Quang Ho and Adrienne Stein as our artists-in-residence,
and
Sam Christian Holmes, who has filled Ladew’s Wildflower Meadow with his striking sculptures.

QUANG HO

Working mostly in oils and occasionally watercolor and pastels, Quang Ho's subject matter ranges from still-life, landscapes, interiors, and dancers, to figuratives. "Subject matter is not really important to me. I can find visual excitement all around me, as well as on the canvas - from a knot on a tree, graceful limp of a flower wilting, to a juxtaposition of a few simple shapes and colors… inspirations are inexhaustible."

Quang was born in Hue, Vietnam in 1963. He immigrated to the United States in 1975 and is now a U.S. Citizen. His artistic interests began at the early age of three and continued through grade school, high school and art school, and have led him to an exciting and successful painting profession. In 1980, at age 16, Quang held his first one-man-show at Tomorrows Masters Gallery in Denver, Colorado. The exhibit was a smashing success for the high school sophomore. In 1982, Quang's mother was killed in a tragic auto accident leaving him the responsibility of raising four younger brothers and a six-year-old sister. That same year, Quang attended the Colorado Institute of Art on a National Scholastics Art Awards Scholarship. At CIA Quang studied painting under Rene Bruhin, whom Quang credits with developing the foundation for his artistic understanding. Ho graduated from CIA in 1985 with Best Portfolio Award for the graduating class. Art dealer Mikkel Saks discovered Quang’s talent and promoted him in his gallery which has led to much success. He also teaches at the Denver Art Students League.

ADRIENNE STEIN

Adrienne Stein’s paintings celebrate the natural world through bold, vibrant color. The lush magical environments and figures she depicts form the nexus between reality and fantasy, expressed through a world of symbolic imagery. Direct observation of nature coalesces with memory, imagination, art history, folklore, archetypes, and natural elements that are fueled by a sense of personal, as well as universal myth. Adrienne is inspired by her travel experiences and the beauty of her garden surrounding the Pennsylvania home she shares with her husband, artist and Ladew’s other 2023 artist-in-residence, Quang Ho, and their son.

Adrienne is an award-winning American artist living and working in Pennsylvania and Colorado. She holds an MFA from Boston University and a BFA Magna Cum Laude from Laguna College of Art & Design. Adrienne has studied under many gifted and influential instructors throughout the United States, France, and Italy.

SAM CHRISTIAN HOLMES: “TOTEMS"
www.samholmesart.com

We are thrilled to feature the vibrant sculptures of Sam Christian Holmes at Ladew this year. The juxtaposition of Sam’s distinctive work in Ladew’s natural setting creates a contrast of soft and hard features that highlight the best of both. His colorful totems rising out of our Meadow are dynamic features telling a lyrical story.

“My works are born out of an iconography in respect for the blacksmithing traditions associated with the African diaspora. The language of the wrought iron gate/fence was during a creolization of the captive craftsman caught in the slave trade and West African bronze workers; images long associated with the religious practices found throughout the African harbors of export. My marks reflect that history while exploring my own personal narratives.”

Sam’s work involves cultural and personal histories and explores the theme of human relationships. Reflecting on these histories is an opportunity for Ladew’s visitors to have a fresh outlook into a part of history often pushed into the background.

About Sam Christian Holmes

Sam has spent much of his career combining his love of making art and teaching art. He specializes in sculpture, printmaking, and digital arts. Sam completed his BFA in printmaking from MICA in 1984. He then apprenticed under Master Printmaker Bob Blackburn at the prestigious Printmakers Workshop in NYC. This experience was a pivotal point in his life and sealed his commitment to a life in the Arts. His Masters degree was earned in 1995 in MICA’s Mount Royal School. He primarily developed sculptural works during his time in Grad school and upon graduation received the Walters Traveling Scholarship, studying in the Afrocentric rich city of Salvador Do Bahia.

As an Educator Sam taught at The Community College of Baltimore County, MICA, and then the historic Howard University in Washington D.C. where he ran the Digital Arts program. He currently splits his time between Morgan State University and MICA’s Graduate program in Community Arts where he is the current Artist-in-Residence.

You will recognize Sam’s work in downtown Baltimore. Additionally, his work can be seen throughout the United States and abroad. Sam’s sculptures exhibited at Ladew are available for sale. A portion of each sale will go to fund Ladew’s Art in our Gardens program.

Sam’s works will be exhibited at Ladew from April through October.
